Angel and Me: A Cat's Love Story

I've always been obsessed with cats. They've lived alongside humans for thousands of years, yet they still hold a bit of mystery. What amazes me most is how humanlike some of their behaviors can be. My cat, Angel, absolutely adores me. She greets me when I come home and sees me off when I leave. She's independent but deeply connected to me in her own way. She even responds when I call her name and has learned my schedule for cuddles and treats. Every morning she patiently waits for me to finish getting ready before meowing for snacks. Her patience and loyalty always surprise me. I love her so much, and I know she loves me too.

When I started this class, I knew I wanted to include my love for cats in my project. My goal was to show what makes living with a cat so rewarding and special. The first page focuses on how Angel and I met and how she truly adopted me. The second page highlights her unique quirks, including how she communicates and shows affection. The third page will explore how she quietly checks in on me every morning, using a short video captured by my home camera. It will show how caring and consistent she is, even in her simplest daily routines.

How Angel and I Met

It was a normal Saturday afternoon on May 5th, 2018, when everything changed. I had just walked into the pet store where I worked, doing what I always did first when I walked in. I glanced toward the cages that held a few cats from the Michigan Humane Society waiting to be adopted. I noticed a small group of kittens playing together, but then I looked up and heard a loud, desperate meow that instantly caught my attention. The sound came from a cat named Angel. She was pacing along the front of her cage, rubbing against the metal bars calling directly to me.

I walked over and began petting her through the bars, and she leaned into my touch like she had been waiting just for me. I clocked in, but I couldn't stay away from her. An hour into my shift, she was still crying for attention, so I finally opened the cage and held her. She immediately rolled and climbed all over me like we had known each other forever. My manager walked up, surprised, and told me that earlier that morning, Angel had refused to move or let anyone touch her. She hadn't eaten or drank anything and had even peed herself from fear. Yet in that moment she was cuddling in my arms, purring like she had found her person. I spent the whole day with her and decided at lunch that I had to adopt her. At the time, I didn't think of the costs. I knew it just had to happen. But that day in particular was free cat adoption day. It truly felt like the universe had brought us together on purpose.

Angel's Quirks, Communication, and Affection

Angel is honestly one of the smartest cats I have ever met. She comes to me when I call her name and she has learned what she's not allowed to do without me constantly repeating myself. When she's about to do something she knows she shouldn't, I make a soft hissing sound with my tongue, like emphasizing the “S” in “snake.” The second she hears it, she stops and looks up at me like she knows exactly what I mean. It's not loud or harsh, but it catches her attention every time. It feels like our own little language, and it makes me smile because I know she's acknowledging my request and thinking it through before deciding what to do next.

Angel also has a routine that matches my own and makes her feel even more connected to me. She greets me at the door with a few meows and a big stretch, as if she's getting ready to run around in excitement. She always wants to sniff my hands first, like she's saying hello and checking where I've been. Then she waits patiently while I change and gets excited because she knows snack time is coming. After that, she checks in for cuddles before sitting nearby to watch whatever I'm doing, like a tiny supervisor. At night, she waits for me to head to bed so she can curl up beside me and sleep until morning. It's a simple routine, but it makes every day feel peaceful, and it makes me feel wanted and needed.

Angel's Routine

Angel has a way of being part of my day before I even wake up. She likes to sleep right beside me, and she stays there through the night like she is keeping me company. In the morning, she is usually already awake or lightly resting while I am still asleep. It is comforting to know she chooses to stay close, and it makes my home feel less empty and more meaningful. Even though cats are known for being independent, Angel has routines that feel consistent and personal. She has learned my schedule and reacts to it, especially when it comes to bedtime and waking up. I wake up and begin my routine in the bathroom. She will come say hi to me during my routine or wait patiently outside the door. She knows my routine very well and I know she wants snacks, but she doesn't get impatient. She knows when I turn the water off from the shower, and I dry off is when she is getting snacks. It amazes me every morning that she sits there quietly and waits for me to be ready.

This short clip is from my home security camera. It shows a typical morning that I think is sweet. My alarm goes off, and Angel is already lying right beside me. As soon as I wake up, my first reaction is to say hello to her and begin petting her while the alarm continues in the background. It may seem like a small moment, but it shows how much of a constant presence she is in my daily life. Before I even start my day, she is already there, checking in and waiting for my love. It is one of those simple routines that reminds me how close our bond is. Heads up, I know my alarm is very annoying, but it is the only thing that wakes me up.
